An Generosity of Unknown Individuals: How a Man I Had Just Met Assisted Me Land the Position That Changed My Life

In the closing decade of the 80s, I was beginning a backpacking trip to the European continent with a companion. Since my friend was considering enrolling in graduate studies in NYC, we had planned a two-week stay there on the way to London.

We reached the graduate housing, a sizeable 10-storey building on the Manhattan's Upper West Side named International House. After dropping our bags, we made our way to the cafeteria, where we picked up meals, took a seat, and began chatting with people eating there.

Sitting next to me was an gentleman from Iraq pursuing an engineering degree at an Ivy League institution. He wanted to know what I did, and I explained that I had just graduated with a degree in science and had been conducting research using an electron microscope.

He pointed out that there was an microscopy facility at the institution – close to the engineering faculty, which was why he was aware of it. He suggested that I consider applying for a job with them. I chuckled at the suggestion, explaining that I was about to fly to Europe and, more critically, I didn’t have a US visa.

A day later I toured the city, going back to the cafeteria that after dark. The man from Iraq walked over to me and let me know that he had arranged an interview for me with the head of the electron microscope unit at Columbia. Given that he had gone to the trouble, I attended the interview – but right away explained to my host that I didn’t have a visa, so I was likely not a suitable candidate.

In typical New York fashion – a place where opportunities abound – she responded: “We'll handle it. When can you start?” I missed my plane to London.

I was employed there for 36 months. One of the benefits was that I also received free tuition at Columbia, and I took advantage to finish a postgrad program in international relations.

We didn't cross paths after that and I don’t even know his full name, but his selfless gesture changed my life in multiple respects. I would never have had the bravery or nerve to approach someone at an Ivy League university and request employment. Additionally, I had consistently hoped to pursue education overseas, but could never have afforded it without that free tuition.

Critically, that role at the university resulted in a position in Switzerland where I met my beautiful French husband, with whom I currently share four amazing children. It was a total sliding doors moment. That helpful person redirected my path in life, and I’m always appreciative.
